Sweet Local Farm

The World Wildlife Fund is asking millions of people across the world to turn out all their lights tonight at 8:30pm to show support against global climate change. I will be hitting the lights and so should you! For more info, check out Earth Hour.

One week left in our apartment before we move to the farm. We are busy packing. I can’t wait to get there! I am going to plant my sugar snap peas the very first day we move.

Yesterday I told my sister that my crocuses were blooming. She said she loves crocuses so much she wanted to name her future daughter crocus, except that it would be a really ugly name…croak us. That made me giggle!

Those students will be involved in the garden as it develops and grows, producing delicious, healthy vegetables to be cooked in the White House Kitchen and given to Miriam’s Kitchen, which serves the homeless in Washington, DC. ”

Buying seeds can be expensive. Make the best of your investment by staying organized. I separated my seeds into two piles, starting indoors and starting outdoors. Then I cataloged them by how many weeks before my last frost date they should be started. Now I just have to stay on top of things and I should have happy seedlings.

The seedlings I started on March 1 have almost all sprouted and are doing well. I guess the cornmeal really works because I haven’t had any more mold. Here is a pic of the Black Beauty eggplants.

As ‘husband to be’, how can I be any more proud?

Karen was featured in the Improper Bostonian’s annual bridal issue. Not only is she the cover girl, but she also appears in an 8 page spread showing off this year’s trends in wedding fashion. Now, if only she could have brought home that $13,420 Monique Lhuillier dress with her.

Our first little sliver of green made its way through the potting soil today. We started the onion, eggplant, and pepper seeds a week ago. The onion seeds are the first to germinate. Here are some pictures of our seed starting station. We got the fluorescent lights and the shelf at Home Depot. Luke is working on his rain barrels so I’ll post pictures of those soon.

You may have noticed our site was down for a while. We had to start over, so here we are!

The weather in Boston isn’t giving me much hope these days. It just snowed again and spring seems a world away. We built a seedling station with fluorescent lights. I started onions, eggplants, and peppers three days ago. I wrapped them in plastic to keep the moisture in, but yesterday I noticed mold! I did some quick research and learned that cornmeal acts as a natural antifugal. I sprinkled it on the pots and uncovered them so they get better circulation. I sincerely hope they aren’t ruined. We are supposed to be moving to the farm in three weeks, but there may be some snags in the road. I’m hoping for the best.
