Mid Winter Thaw

Today we had a lovely mid winter thaw. It was sunny and 45 degrees. We took the opportunity to get some outside chores done. I took down the Christmas lights and wreath and swept up the front porch. Luke and I cleaned out the goat’s nest in the barnyard. We brought manure to the greenhouse, which was a toasty 75 degrees today.

This is the perfect time of year to force bulbs and forsythia. I planted some bulbs leftover from our wedding favors last fall and put them in the basement of the barn. Today I brought them indoors and watered them. In a few weeks I should have some beautiful blooms. I also picked a vase of forsythia for forcing.

I have two large forsythia bushes so I won’t miss a few branches come spring.

Each little bud will be a cheery yellow flower:

I can’t wait for the first signs of spring!
