Grape Trellis update

It’s been two years since our neighbor first brought us some grape sprigs and they have finally topped out on our pergola.

Our friend, Aaron, helped us build this massive pergola a few years ago on one of his visits to the east coast. We’re excited for it to one day be overtaken by grape vines so we can enjoy the nice shade underneath.

And even better than grape vines…grapes!!!

We’re not exactly sure what kind they are, as our neighbor didn’t speak a lick of English, so we’re excited to see if they turn purple or stay green. The squirrels and chipmunks have been pulling them off one by one, so hopefully they survive long enough to become ripe.

Anybody know how to identify grape varieties?

Growing Pole Beans and Bush Beans

This year we chose two varieties of green pole beans, Blue Lake and Kentucky Wonder. Pole beans grow as high as 6 ft tall so we had to construct teepees to support the growth. We used saplings that we cut down last fall and dried out. After sticking them in the ground, we tied them securely with twine. Then we planted a bean seed by each pole. The teepees add a rustic, sculptural quality to the garden.

The beans take seven days to germinate.

About a week and a half ago we planted bush beans. They require less support because they don’t grow as tall. We are growing Kidney Beans, Soy Beans, and Yellow Wax Beans.

Luke made this support system for the bush beans:
